My family and I have lived in Berkeley for over 37 years. Our children grew up here and we have always been actively involved in the public schools, youth sports and other activities. I grew up in a small town in West Texas, the eldest daughter with four younger brothers. My dad was the local physician and I grew up, feeling like a princess. I thought I could do anything. People are continually amazed with my accomplishments, from the beautiful quilts that I make to the unique properties that I find for my clients with special requirements.
Prior to becoming a Realtor, I worked for many years in health care, including over five years as Clinic Director at Over 60 Health Center. I volunteered for many years as a driver for the North Berkeley Senior Center Meals on Wheels program and served on the Board of Directors at Chaparral House, and at Legal Assistance for Seniors in Oakland.
My proudest accomplishment was working with a group of dedicated community members to establish Ashby Village, a senior services program in Berkeley which enables seniors to stay in their own homes as they get older. I served on their Board of Directors and continue to volunteer my talents. Most importantly, I truly enjoy working with seniors, their families and other senior service providers.
At Over 60 Health Center, I realized that many seniors were intimidated by the real estate process. I thought that by becoming a Realtor who specialized in working with seniors, I would combine my interests in business and real estate with my knowledge of and desire to help seniors and their families.
My clients include seniors who are selling their family homes and downsizing to condominiums or senior retirement communities as well as seniors who are first time homebuyers. I work with Berkeley families who are looking for local housing for their parents and seniors who are trying to make the best investment choices for their long term retirement needs. Many of my clients are interested in creative housing options including aging-in-place, shared housing, elder co-housing and accessory housing. As a Realtor I can help them with all aspects of buying and selling property.
I am very knowledgeable about local senior housing resources and have relationships with senior social service providers as well as lenders, reverse mortgage specialists, senior move managers, contractors and others. I recently helped a couple from Ohio find and purchase a coop apartment near their children in Berkeley and was able to refer them to the local adult day and respite programs that they required.
My unique combination of specialized realty skills with experience with the health and financial needs of seniors enables me to assist with practical, comprehensive planning. I am the East Bay real estate agent with the most knowledge of and the most experience in working directly with seniors.
“We would recommend Joann Sullivan without hesitation to anyone who is interested in finding the right home to purchase, and would like to do so with peace of mind that you have an agent with knowledge and experience working with you.” —D.M. & O.M.
“With her careful and competitive arrangements for pre-inspection, contingency removal and discussions with owners and agents, Joann Sullivan of Thornwall Properties single-handedly made sure my offer was accepted. There were multiple bids, some equal to mine, on this Berkeley property, and without her constant attention and advise on pre-arrangements and pricing, I would certainly not now own my home.” —Anne Winters
“Joann Sullivan is a caring and positive individual who really knows the real estate business in the Bay Area. She had great suggestions that helped us get the best possible value out of my mother's house. Because of her professionalism and creativity, we received multiple offers on the property even though we were selling it long distance!” —Katie Johnson
