About Arlington, VA The rich history and continuing development of Arlington, VA make it a wonderfully unique place to live. Located just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, Arlington was once considered a part of the Federal City established by Congress and selected by President Washington in the late 1790’s as the seat of the new government. Its 26 square miles contain numbers of Federal Government office complexes, including the Pentagon, as well as “urban villages” of homes, townhomes, condos and businesses attractive to all ages and all manner of families. These communities, including Ballston, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Courthouse, to name but a few, offer convenience to work in Northern VA., DC, or Maryland, shops to sustain you and amenities for fun and relaxation. Although the population density is one of the highest nationally, Arlington has consistently been recognized for its smart growth planning. Education is of paramount importance to the residents of Arlington as they held the most graduate degrees of any city in the US as reported by a 2006 CNN Money survey. The Public Schools, K-12, consistently rank in the top 10 of spending per pupil. Arlington is also home to Marymount University as well as within a short commute to The George Washington University, Georgetown University, American University, Northern Virginia Community College and James Mason University. Major corporations have taken advantage of this pool of educated workers by locating their headquarters in Arlington. Among these are AES, Albritton Communications, CACI, Rosetta Stone and many others. Year round, Arlington hosts an array of places to visit and festivals, craft shows, and concerts to attend. Historic sites such as Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place of generations of service personnel and of President John F. Kennedy, The Custis-Lee Mansion, The Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are much visited by tourists and locals alike. The beautiful, tree-lined streets of Arlington, the wonderful neighborhoods and attractions, and the educational and employment possibilities consistently make Arlington a good place to call home.
