Fifteen miles north of Albuquerque on the northwest edge of the Sandias, the town of Bernalillo lies on the banks of the Rio Grande. Founded by Don Diego de Vargas in 1695, the town is one of the oldest in the Southwest. Now connected to Albuquerque by the New Mexico Rail Runner, Bernalillo is quickly becoming a busy community but clings to its history with pride.
Festivals and Recreation
Tracing their roots to the 1600s are the New Mexico vineyards. To celebrate the industry, the town partners with the New Mexico Wineries to host the annual Wine Festival each Labor Day. Music, arts and crafts, great food, and, of course, wine, make the event a day to remember. More than 40 wineries produce nearly 700,000 gallons of wine annually in the region.
Another unique local festival is Las Fiestas de San Lorenz. The event is in honor of Bernalillo\'s patron saint, San Lorenzo, and is celebrated with a ritual dance called lost Matachines. The August festival includes local entertainment, a rodeo, a parade, and a car show.
If you enjoy hiking and picnics beneath the amazing New Mexico skies, you will love the Sandia Lakes Recreational Area. Just take the I-25 to exit 234 west, then head one mile north on NM 313. You will find a playground, shelters, and even a bait & tackle store, all conveniently close to Bernalillo homes for sale.
Education
Bernalillo has several day care centers for working parents as well as two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. There is also a charter school for students from sixth through eighth grades.
