Located in central New Mexico, about 35 miles south of Albuquerque, Belen is named for the Spanish word for "Bethlehem." The city was first settled by Spanish colonists in the mid-18th century and has been a major transportation mecca for more than 100 years, earning it the nickname the "Hub City." Belen has a current population of around 7,500 residents, many of whom commute to work in nearby Albuquerque. The city is know for its many parks, its annual Mexican barbeque festival and as the home of waffle fries.
School-age children of Belen New Mexico real estate owners attend the 11 schools of the Belen Consolidated School District. The district, which has an enrollment of around 4,700 students, owns and operates one high school, one middle school, seven elementary schools, an alternative school and a family school for home-schooling.
